A part of the Psychic Kids TV series on A&E, this book, by the show's host and "psychic investigator" Coffey, attempts to help children deal with their psychic abilities. Often these children, explains Coffey, some of them very young, are overwhelmed and frightened by their abilities, which may include seeing ghosts or being able to predict the future. Coffey's background includes training as a counselor, so whether or not one is a believer in psychic abilities, he offers down-to-earth advice on subjects including how to help children sleep in their own beds when they are afraid of monsters or how to spot the warning signs of a potentially suicidal adolescent. Psychic children, like all children who don't adhere to society's norms, may need special treatment by their school, their family, and their peers. In addition, Coffey offers insight into his own experiences as a psychic, including encounters with the paranormal. The book includes a glossary of terms, prayers of protection, and Coffey's favorite encounters with the paranormal. VERDICT This surprisingly well-written and grounded volume should appeal to open-minded parents who will find the advice helpful for their children, psychic or not.—Susan Flaherty, Portland P.L., ME
