The 303rd Bomb Group, a division of the U.S. Eighth Air Force in Europe, has a specific mission: the strategic bombing of Germany. They accomplished this task via Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses, with the intention of destroying both industrial and military targets throughout the Reich. The expenses, damages, and casualties on both sides were significant, including more than 1,500 causalities and more than 5,000 injured. Former marine Stout (Fighter Group: The 352nd "Blue-Nosed Bastards" in World War II) provides a collection of anecdotes and vignettes taken from records archived by the unit association after the war. Source material includes diaries, letters, and official records; all thoroughly cited. These vignettes are strung together with some superficial historical material that provides a bare minimum of context for the individuals' own words, or the author's recounting of the incident. Despite the mention of the aircrafts, there is surprisingly little attention given to effects of bombing.Verdict Although this account does not present a narrative history of the operations, it does provide a glimpse of the sacrifices and strengths of soldiers who participated in an unprecedented level of war and supplements more conventional studies of the air campaign against Nazi Germany.—Edwin Burgess, U.S. Army Combined Arms Research Lib., Fort Leavenworth, KS
