Langenscheidt Publishing Acquires Berlitz

By LJ Staff

The Langenscheidt Publishing Group, a leading publisher of dictionaries, maps, atlases, and travel guides, has announced its intent to purchase Berlitz's consumer publishing assets and license that company's name. According to Langenscheidt, the Berlitz catalog consists of 590 titles in 21 product lines and eight language markets, making it a leading player in that arena. There is some significant overlap in the markets, with Langenscheidt's extensive publishing operations spread across Germany, the UK, France, Poland, Singapore, and the United States. Terms of the purchase, which is expected to close by the end of this month, were not revealed at press time, nor were any plans Langenscheidt might have for combined products.
