Libraries have always been much more than just repositories for books and other materials. They’ve also been centers for community learning and brought people together to improve their lives. This goal has become even more important in the digital era.
Lifestyle-related content such as cooking, crafting, gardening, self-help, and other how-to advice continues to be popular with readers of all ages. But the rise of social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and Tumblr—and the use of these platforms to build one’s brand—is changing how publishers find and recruit authors for lifestyle-themed books.
“The major social media platforms are a marvelous place to discover lifestyle leaders,” says Brenda Knight, publisher at Mango Publishing.
Using influencers to create lifestyle-related content helps publishers ensure a ready-made audience for their books. For instance, Ilana Muhlstein operates a food-delivery service based on a cooking and dietary methodology that helped her lose more than 100 pounds, and as many as 10,000 people have subscribed. This established following was one reason Mango invited her to write a cookbook featuring healthy, nutritious recipes that support readers’ weight-loss goals.
Allison Vallin Kostovick is a lifestyle influencer with a popular gardening blog, and she’s written books on cultivating a gardening lifestyle for Workman imprint Storey Publishing.
“Storey’s authors typically have an engaged following,” says Alee Moncy, associate director of marketing and publicity. “They don’t need thousands of followers, but we do want an engaged readership with an interest in what they have to offer.”
Having a built-in platform reduces the risk that publishers assume in taking on a new book project, but it’s not the most important consideration. Finding authors who are experts in their field and can provide useful, accurate information is still the overriding factor.
“We're excited to work with anyone who is passionate about what they do and who has a clear vision for sharing their knowledge or skills with the world,” says Blue Star Press Editorial Director Lindsay Wilkes-Edrington.
Here are some of the new and notable lifestyle-related books for fall 2023.
Interlink Publishing
Northampton, Massachusetts–based Interlink Publishing is an independent company that produces about 50 new titles per year. Its works include literature, history, contemporary politics, art, cultural and travel guides, cookbooks, and illustrated children’s books with an international perspective.
“We’re trying to bring the world together and build bridges between people from different cultures,” says Managing Director Harrison Williams.
The company aims to publish one new cookbook per month. These books feature cuisines from around the world and are written by authors native to those regions. They include stories and photos that immerse readers in both the food and the culture of each area.
For instance, Bao Family Cookbook: Recipes from the Eight Culinary Regions of China by Celine Chung, photos by Gregoire Kalt, September 2023, ISBN 9781623717421, is a delicious, culturally rich read that marries traditional Chinese cooking with contemporary Parisian style and flavors. “Bringing these two things together in a surprising fusion is really quite magical,” Williams says.
The Bao family of the title is actually a group of chefs connected through their work at Chung’s various Bao restaurants in Paris. The book includes recipes that demonstrate the variety of Chinese cooking, breaking down the monolith that many people associate with Chinese cuisine.
Gennaro’s Cucina: Hearty Money-Saving Meals from an Italian Kitchen by Gennaro Contaldo, October 2023, ISBN 9781623717551, features delicious Italian recipes that use accessible and affordable ingredients, compiled by one of the world’s most beloved Italian chefs.
Cucina povera is the food that fed impoverished families in old Italy. Its ethos is to use every last scrap from the kitchen that you can, an approach that fits in well with today’s focus on sustainability and reducing waste. In compiling this book, Gennaro has drawn upon his family history growing up on a limited budget in postwar Italy. His personality “leaps off the page,” Williams says.
Before the guitar, there was the lute—and before the lute there was the oud, an 11-stringed instrument with no frets that originated in the Middle East. The Oud: An Illustrated History by Rachel Beckles Willson, November 2023, ISBN 9781623717520, details the history of this elegant instrument and its place throughout the culture of numerous countries.
Ukraine at War: Street Art, Posters, and Poetry by Daoud Sarhandi-Williams, December 2023, ISBN 9781623717261, showcases how Ukrainian society is using art as a tool for resistance in its fight against Russian imperialism. The author is an award-winning British writer and filmmaker. He spent several weeks photographing Ukrainian street art in summer 2022, and his book is a testament to the country’s resilience and creativity in the face of invasion.
“You can hear about something in the news, and it still feels abstract and far away,” Williams says. “We’re hoping a book like this helps bring the impact of the Ukrainian war home for many readers.” A portion of the book’s proceeds are being donated to help feed the Ukrainian people.
Frontieres: The Food of France’s Borderlands by Alex Jackson, photos by Charlotte Bland, December 2023, ISBN 9781623711184, is another Interlink cookbook that explodes the myth that a nation’s cuisine is all the same. “When people think of French cuisine, they think of Parisian-style cooking, with white tablecloths and fine dining,” Williams says. This book explores how outside influences have shaped the diverse flavors of French cooking along the country’s borders.
Culture Smart! Guides
“Culture Smart!” is a series of guidebooks written for those who want to enrich their experiences abroad and who want to gain a deeper understanding of foreign cultures and ways of life. Published by Kuperard, the series has been in publication since 2003 and today offers guides to over 100 countries around the world.
Each Culture Smart! guide focuses on a particular country and contains information about the country’s history, values, attitudes, local customs, traditions, holidays, and festivals. There are also sections on social and business etiquette, tips on communication, both verbal and non-verbal, and advice on how to be a good guest.
“It’s not a ‘where to go, what to see’ type of guide,” says Series Editor Daniel Kuperard. “It’s a guide that helps readers get to know the people of a country, navigate social situations, and engage in meaningful cultural exchange—which at its heart, is one of travel’s great gifts.”
To date, the series includes guides to 115 countries in total. Popular titles include Culture Smart! Japan by Paul Norbury, April 2021, ISBN 9781787028920; Culture Smart! India by Becky Stephen, April 2021, ISBN 9781787029002; and Culture Smart! Iceland by Thorgeir Sveinsson, July 2021, ISBN 9781787029040.
The newest titles, released in August 2023, are Culture Smart! Mexico by Russell Maddicks, ISBN 9781787023420; Culture Smart! Argentina by Mary Godward, ISBN 9781787023369; Culture Smart! Brazil by Sandy Branco, ISBN 9781787023390; and Culture Smart! Poland by Gregory Allen and Magdalena Lipska, ISBN 9781787023307. The series is distributed in the U.S. by IPG.
The books’ authors are mostly outsiders as opposed to natives of the countries they’re writing about. They include diplomats, journalists, academics, artists, and others who’ve had to become fluent in a new culture to fit in, and this experience gives them a unique perspective. “They’re people who’ve had to walk the walk, and they share with readers the knowledge they’ve learned from this process,” Kuperard says.
All the guides are available in print or ebook format, and many are also available as audiobooks.
When COVID restricted travel worldwide, Kuperard braced for a steep drop in sales that never came. Instead, sales of the series increased by roughly 60 percent in the U.S. and 40 percent in the U.K. in 2022 compared to 2019, indicating the books’ growing appeal. The experience demonstrated that the value of Culture Smart! books extends well beyond just serving as travel guides to destinations.
“With the series being focused on customs and etiquette, Culture Smart!’s readership is not limited to travelers or those going abroad for studies or work,” Kuperard says. “The books offer an engaging and insightful read for anyone who wants to learn more about a particular country and its culture—and it’s this aspect that makes Culture Smart! guides a popular choice for armchair travelers, too.”
In 2021, Kuperard relaunched the series with a new design and updated and additional content. For instance, the more recent guides include a section on how each country responded to COVID and what can be learned about its culture as a result. A “Useful Apps” section highlights the most useful digital tools for navigating each country.
“At its best,” Kuperard concludes, “what Culture Smart! does is to lay the foundation for increased cross-cultural understanding.”
Storey Publishing
An imprint of Hachette division Workman Publishing, Storey publishes practical nonfiction books that support creative self-reliance, covering topics ranging from gardening and homesteading to health and well-being.
“Our editors seek out experts in their field,” says Alee Moncy, associate director of marketing and publicity. “They go to conferences and find people who are teaching courses on a topic.” The company’s authors aren’t usually writers by trade, she explains; first and foremost, they’re experts in their specific niche category.

“I love this book because it shows mindfulness in practice among persons of color,” says Publicist Katie Sheehan.
Brief Flashings in the Phenomenal World by Katie Arnold, April 2024, ISBN 9781952692697, is a memoir of life-shattering injury and healing from an elite runner who turned to Zen teachings to help overcome a life-altering injury. Workman Publishing
A division of Hachette, Workman Publishing Company produces adult and children’s books and calendars, including “The Original Page-a-Day” calendars. Its imprints include Workman, Workman Children’s, Workman Calendars, Artisan, Algonquin Books, Algonquin Young Readers, Storey Publishing, and Timber Press. The company is best known for its nonfiction lifestyle content, including the “What to Expect” series of pregnancy and parenting guides.
A new Workman title that gives timely advice for parents in our post-pandemic world is Raising a Kid Who Can: Simple Strategies to Build a Lifetime of Adaptability and Emotional Strength by Catherine McCarthy, Heather Tedesco, and Jennifer Weaver, September 2023, ISBN 9781523518593. Written by three mental health professionals who work with families, the book includes tips to help parents raise children who are resilient in the face of adversity.
“As parents, we must override the evolutionary instinct to relieve our kids’ suffering in the moment,” they write. “Science tells us that kids function best and recover more quickly when they can recognize, name, and, most importantly, accept their feelings.”
Toward that end, the authors invite parents to compare negative feelings such as sadness, anger, or grief to a tunnel, as opposed to a cave. It might be dark and scary in both places, the authors note. But using the tunnel metaphor, children can move through those feelings, accept them, and come out into the light on the other side, instead of getting trapped.
From Workman imprint Storey Publishing comes Edible Houseplants: Grow Your Own Citrus, Coffee, Vanilla, and 43 Other Tasty Tropical Plants by Laurelynn G. Martin and Byron E. The book’s 120 recipes feature 65 different sauces and spices that are easily accessible in any grocery store yet can instantly elevate everyday cooking—from making the most succulent pot roast ever by adding oyster sauce, to transforming a broiled salmon filet with miso.
Blue Star Press
Based in Bend, Oregon, Blue Star Press is an independent publisher of books focused on the arts, creative processes, wellness, and self-help nonfiction. The company publishes 40 to 50 new titles per year.
Books for new parents has been one of the fastest-growing areas for Blue Star Press in recent years, from advice for first-time parents to beautifully designed but also smart and engaging content for parents of newborns. “There is a real demand for thoughtful, intentionally designed and developed content for new parents,” says Editorial Director Lindsay Wilkes-Edrington.
An example is The Organized Home for New Parents: Create Routine-Ready Spaces for Your Baby’s First Years by Ría Safford, October 2023, ISBN 9781958803042. The book fills what Wilkes-Edrington describes as a key need: While there are many books for new parents, “there isn’t much information about how to organize your home to prepare for life with a newborn.”
The author is a home organizer and mother of three with a large following on Instagram. She advises readers how to prioritize their newborn necessities with easy checklists; organize their nursery, stroller, and diaper bag; and make food preparation more manageable, among other activities.

Brown Books Publishing Group
Mandy Schaniel knows firsthand what it’s like to feel self-doubt—the kind that can cripple your self-confidence and hold you back from success. But she also knows how to overcome it.
When Schaniel was asked to join the executive team at ZipRecruiter early in the company’s history, she experienced imposter syndrome. She was working in an industry she knew nothing about in the male-dominated world of tech startups, and she wasn’t sure she belonged at first.
Schaniel managed to channel her fear and use it to propel her career forward. At age 29, she became a vice president. During her four-and-a-half-year tenure at ZipRecruiter, she helped lead the company to its first million-dollar month, built its first account management team, and created a safe space for women and men to seek mentorship from growth-minded leaders like her. Her experience led to executive VP positions with other companies as well.
When ZipRecruiter went public, Schaniel had an opportunity to retire early from the corporate world. Now, she provides leadership coaching for others—and she’s written a book to help people overcome their fears and chart a path toward success.
Faith Over Fear: How to Adopt a Success Mindset, September 2023, ISBN 9781612546230, helps readers conquer their self-doubt by developing an unshakable belief in themselves. “I’ve always wanted to help people, and I loved doing that as a corporate leader,” Schaniel says. “I learned a lot of these lessons the hard way, and I struggled with my confidence early on.” Her goal is to help others avoid making the same mistakes by teaching them how to recognize their fear, manage it, and use it to achieve their goals.
Schaniel’s book is being published by Brown Books Publishing Group (BBPG) of Dallas, Texas. Founded by entrepreneur, author, and publisher Milli Brown in 1994, BBPG publishes about 50 new titles per year. The company has pioneered a Relationship Publishing® business model that empowers authors to retain the rights to their work. In 2020, Publishers Weekly named BBPG a Top-5 Fast-Growing Independent Publisher for the third consecutive year.
In Faith Over Fear, Schaniel provides actionable strategies for achieving personal and professional growth. By recognizing readers’ personal skills and calling, Schaniel demonstrates how they can replace fear with self-confidence. She is donating 10 percent of proceeds to various charitable organizations, including the Cancer Research Institute and the Wounded Warrior Project.
“Everybody can do hard things and achieve the goals they have for themselves,” she asserts. “I’m sharing tips that have worked well for me.”
Casemate Publishers
Founded in 2001, Casemate is a Philadelphia-based book publisher and distributor. The company publishes about 100 titles of its own per year, mostly works on military or local history, and its IPM division handles North American sales, marketing, and distribution for nearly 50 international publishers.
One of these publishers is U.K.-based Pen & Sword Books, whose White Owl Books imprint features lifestyle-related content such as books on crafting, gardening, and video games.
For instance, Sew Mindful Cross Stitch by Sophie Crabb, November 2023, ISBN 9781399045872, is a beginner-friendly introduction to cross-stitch, presented from a mindfulness perspective. The book includes 22 projects, complete with step-by-step instructions. For each one, Crabb reflects on why the project is meaningful to her—and she discusses how cross-stitch can have a profound effect on wellbeing.
White Owl has also published a series of books from Scottish video gaming journalist Chris Scullion, exploring various consoles throughout the history of gaming. The latest book in the series is The Dreamcast Encyclopedia: Every Game Released for the Sega Dreamcast, November 2023, ISBN 9781526772237.
The book focuses on what Marketing Director Daniel Yesilonis calls a more “obscure” gaming console, the Sega Dreamcast—but it’s sure to appeal to many fans, he says, because the Dreamcast is remembered fondly by players as a system that was ahead of its time. Its incredible graphics offered a level of detail that hadn’t been seen to that point, and its built-in modem brought online multiplayer functionality to many players for the first time.
Ultimately, though, the release of the PS2 led to falling sales, and Sega would soon stop making gaming consoles altogether. With descriptions and screenshots for every game produced for the Dreamcast, this book is the definitive guide to one of the most underrated gaming systems ever produced.
New Harbinger Publications
Based in Oakland, California, New Harbinger Publications is an independent, employee-owned publisher of books on psychology, health, spirituality, and personal growth. The company, which publishes more than 60 titles annually, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
“Our mission is to reduce human suffering in all forms,” says Sales Director Margo Beren. “We offer the very best in psychology-based publishing. Most of our authors have a PhD in their subject, and they’re writing about their life’s work. They come to us eager to get their message out to a broader audience.”
There is no question that sexual trauma is a huge issue for many people, and while several books offer help for the survivors of sexual trauma, there is a gap in the literature aimed at the partners of these victims. Loving Someone Who Has Sexual Trauma: A Compassionate Guide to Supporting Your Partner and Improving Your Relationship by Megan L Negendank, October 2023, ISBN 9781648481574, aims to fill this gap. The book offers a unique, trauma-informed approach to help readers understand and support their partner better so they can improve their relationship.
A 2021 Gallup poll found that coming out of the pandemic, more people felt stressed, sad, angry, or worried than ever before. I’m Not Okay and That’s Okay: Mental Health Microskills to Deal with Life’s Inevitable Struggles by Steff Du Bois, November 2023, ISBN 9781648481758, is intended to help people who struggle with negative or self-critical thoughts and emotions that get in the way of everyday life. It provides simple “pick me up” skills and strategies that can help readers feel better instantly, wherever they are. “Self-help needs to be given in bite-sized chunks, so people can take it on the go and apply it anywhere,” Beren says. “That’s what this book does.” The title is a play on I’m OK–You’re OK, a seminal 1967 self-help book by psychiatrist Thomas Anthony Harris.
To deal with stress, many people turn to alcohol. Simple Ways to Unwind without Alcohol: 50 Tips to Drink Less and Enjoy More by Rebecca E. Williams, November 2023, ISBN 9781648482342, offers practical advice for using nonalcoholic alternatives to reduce stress. Williams is “not preaching abstinence,” Beren explains; instead, the book is aimed at those who want to cut back or have recently quit drinking and need other ways to calm themselves in times of stress.

Based in Miami, Mango Publishing is an independent book publisher highly engaged in social justice and environmental causes. Named the fastest-growing independent publisher by Publishers Weekly for two years in a row (2019 and 2020), the company produces about 100 new titles per year.

Marinkovic, creator of the popular YouTube channel Treasure Books, offers advice on how to create beautiful journals by hand, without requiring any bookbinding tools. “Book lovers like anything about the bookmaking process,” says Publisher Brenda Knight. Early sales would seem to support this statement, as this was one of Mango’s top-selling books in August.
In The Beer Lover’s Guide to Cider: American Ciders for Craft Beer Fans to Explore, September 2023, ISBN 9781684812400, author Beth Demmon invites beer lovers to explore a healthier, gluten-free beer alternative: cider. Judging by readers’ tastes in beer, Demmon describes which types of cider enthusiasts of craft beers will enjoy. An award-winning beverage journalist, Demmon is “truly a person with an encyclopedic knowledge,” Knight says. “This is a fun book that takes a fun approach to its topic.”
As more people try to eat in sustainable and healthy ways, they’re looking for information on delicious and filling vegan recipes—and Mango is leaning into this trend with Vegan Party Planning: Easy Plant-Based Recipes and Exciting Dinner Party Themes by Nicole Vranjican, October 2023, ISBN 9781684812424. The book’s fall release is timed perfectly for the holiday entertaining season.

Muhlstein’s own 100-pound weight loss journey gives her unique expertise in guiding others. Her first book, You Can Drop It, was published by Simon & Schuster in 2020 and has sold more than 50,000 copies. In this book, she demonstrates that you don’t have to sacrifice good food while trying to lose weight; you can still eat satisfying meals with low-cal options.
“This is a breakthrough kind of book,” Knight says. “She has really mastered this topic.”
