STEAM content on hooplaHoopla digital last week announced an agreement with eBooks2go that will add thousands of educational ebooks and homeschooling materials to the digital content platform’s service, offering library patrons access to Shell Education and TIME FOR KIDS content from Teacher Created Materials Publishing, as well as ebooks and other resources from Boys Town Press using their Apple iOS, Android, Chrome, and Amazon Fire devices. Educational materials are “a big part of hoopla, whether it’s the homeschool market, K–12, early literacy, or other areas,” said Jeff Jankowski, cofounder of hoopla digital and VP of its parent company, Midwest Tape. “We curate collections to support summer reading programs and STEAM collections, we target certain publishers, build robust collections and then provide marketing materials to branches. It’s powerful and impactful for a school or book club to be able to choose a book on hoopla and have immediate access to it without waiting” via the platform’s simultaneous access model for all content. Jankowski also told LJ that “there are around 2,000,000 home schooled children in the United States. Many parents are already utilizing their local public library to support them, and public libraries have an increased demand for digital content and flat budgets. With hoopla, libraries can add tens of thousands of educational ebooks and audiobooks to augment the diverse needs of their communities without having to paying anything up front.” The average cost per circ pricing for these and other educational materials is $1.32, he said. Print and ebook publishing services provider eBooks2go viewed hoopla as an attractive distribution partner for the library market, Leslie Chirchirillo, business operations manager, explained in an announcement. “We saw an increased demand for library distribution and needed to find additional channels to expand the reach of [our] growing catalog,” Chirchirillo said. “We want to provide our authors and partners the opportunity to offer their eBooks through all of the leading retail channels in the industry.” Although hoopla has established itself as a platform for entertainment, offering library patrons access to movies, TV shows, and popular fiction and nonfiction ebooks, audiobooks, comics, and more, Jankowski said that educational materials present an opportunity for library streaming services as well. Parent company “Midwest Tape has been serving the needs of public libraries for over 30 years, and while we started as a video vendor, we have truly evolved, as have public libraries,” Jankowski said. “In an age where algorithms present information and entertainment in largely superficial ways, I envision that hoopla helps public libraries present information and entertainment in ways that empower people to delve, discover and access their interests in a deeper manner.”
