We received responses either through the institutional survey or individuals representing 40 of the 49 LIS schools surveyed in the United States and from 2,023 of the reported LIS graduates. Response rates varied among the programs, ranging from less than 1% of reported graduates to 83%. Approximately 44.3% of graduates from the participating LIS programs responded to the survey.

This year several schools chose to conduct their own surveys and provide data for the LJ salary survey. These included Catholic University of America, University of Illinois, University of Michigan, University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill, San Jose State University, University of Texas at Austin, and University of Washington. In some instances incomplete information was provided.

Schools were offered the choice of responding by paper or electronic survey, with most choosing the electronic format. Some graduates and schools reported incomplete information, rendering some data unusable. For schools that did not complete the institutional survey, data were taken from graduate surveys and thus are not full representation of all graduating classes.

We are pleased that some schools that were unable to participate in the past were able to do so this year, including Clarion University of Pennsylvania, University of Hawaii, University of North Carolina–Greensboro, and Valdosta University.

The following schools declined to participate, did not respond to calls for participation, or had no graduate participation: University of Arizona, University of Denver, Emporia State University, Kent State University, University of Maryland, North Carolina Central, Queens College, University of Rhode Island, St. John’s University, and University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. North Carolina Central University provided graduation statistics, but graduates did not participate in the survey. The Canadian programs, including Alberta, British Columbia, Dalhousie, McGill, Montreal, Toronto, and Western Ontario, conduct their own annual salary and placements surveys and do not participate in the LJ annual survey. The University of Puerto Rico does not participate.
