Although this documentary is long (an impressive 135 minutes!), it is one of the most important films regarding Muslim women on the market today. It employs ancient Persian art and Koranic passages to showcase how unprecedented rights were granted to women 1,433 years ago under the banner of Islam. Director Huq's professional-quality production explores women's rights through a historical lens and a frank discussion of current issues led by distinguished speakers, among them Mona Eltahawy, Azadeh Moaveni, and Amina Wadud. Along with addressing specific wrongs, the production exposes the hijacking of Islam by the culture and traditions of every Islamic country to the point where women's rights are no longer recognizable or in some countries even existent. VERDICT This documentary is mandatory viewing not only for all religious and women's studies students but for members of the general public who desire accurate information regarding women and Islam either historically or within a modern context. Even more important, it is an exceptional film for the Ummah (Islamic community). Highly recommended.—Cheryl Abdullah, Dover Town Lib., MA
