In the 1980s, wildly successful director Steven Spielberg, through his Amblin production company, executive produced a number of films, many aimed at the youth market. The 1985 adventure film
The Goonies followed the exploits of seven kids as they battled pirates and other evildoers. The film did moderately well at the box office but has since acquired cult status, thanks to cable television and home video. Acknowledging the film's 30th anniversary, this documentary interviews the film's director, Richard Donner, plus a few adult cast members and a couple of former child stars (e.g., Sean Astin and Corey Feldman). The film describes how rainy weather conditions in the picturesque town of Astoria, OR, made filming a challenge. Spielberg was a frequent visitor to the set and pitched in with second unit work. Probably for legal reasons, the documentary has no film clips and barely any production stills. Spielberg is not interviewed, nor is Josh Brolin, one of the breakout young cast members. The documentary provides few insights into the film's lasting power or qualities, except to say it was "made with love."
VERDICT Originally shown on YouTube, this production suffers from the usual self-regard and lack of perspective of fandom. Not recommended.
