OrangeReviewStarThis four-episode television miniseries of reenactments, voice-overs, original footage, and exceptional acting portraying British citizens and soldiers during World War I is astounding. Taken from diaries, letters, and memoirs, the film presents the stories of young men in the trenches, wives working in factories, and ordinary citizens. Brian Cox (The Bourne Supremacy) plays a vicar who finds his small town altered forever by the forced inscription of young and old men to the battlefields. Daniel Mays (Atonement) plays Reg Evans, a volunteer at the start of the war, who writes letters to his mother every few days. Narrated by Olivia Colman (Broachchurch), whose command of the story is always appropriate to the emotion of the moment, brings all of the performances together. A 12-page booklet presents an abbreviated history of the war, lists the main participants by country, and offers an examination of trench warfare and the suffragist movement. VERDICT This program is highly recommended for all libraries; war aficionados, history buffs, and fans of war documentaries will find these episodes stirring.—Jason L. Steagall, Gateway Technical Coll. Lib., Elkhorn, WI
