Summer Merriweather has returned to her hometown in North Carolina after her mother Hildy’s death. Now running her mother’s Beach Reads Bookstore, she is still trying to navigate her childhood memories and her mother’s legacy, along with the aftermath of leaving her fiancé at the altar. Hosting author Lana Livingston at the bookstore for their Valentine’s Day event should have been a delightful time, but the next morning Lana is found dead, and one of Hildy’s best friends, Glads, is accused of poisoning her. Summer knows that Glads would never do such a thing, but the detective who has been tailing Lana is determined to prove it. Summer has the support of the Mermaid Pie Book Club on her side, and a possible love triangle, drug trafficking, and a sprained ankle will not stop her from discovering the truth to save her mother’s friend—and her business.
VERDICT A slightly more serious cozy mystery from Blackburn (Once Upon a Seaside Murder), touching on family issues and illegal drugs, but with all of the warm hometown setting and entertaining supporting characters that cozy readers enjoy.
