In Wesley’s third Odessa Jones mystery (following
A Fatal Glow), widow Odessa’s dual careers, as a real estate agent and a caterer, are finally taking off. When Dessa’s boss at Risko Realty hires two young women real estate agents from a rival agency, not everyone is welcoming. At the same time, Dessa’s ex-fiancé reappears in her life and wants to make amends. After one of the new agents is killed by a hit-and-run driver while jogging, the police want to call it an accident, but Dessa isn’t convinced. With the help of her two aunts, her coworkers, and retired cop Lennox Royal, she starts to piece everything together. Will her psychic gifts help her identify the guilty party before someone else is killed?
VERDICT Odessa’s psychic gifts (divining a person’s emotions by seeing colored glimmers around their head, and sensing and smelling things that others can’t) are a creative plot device. Her aunts add humor to the mystery, and it’s good to see characters from the previous novels return. Recommend to fans of paranormal cozies and culinary mysteries.
