Connally (aka S.C. Perkins, author of the “Ancestry Detective” mysteries) sets her new series in Regency-era London. Petra Forsyth, daughter of the Earl of Holbrook, is a feminist before her time. After losing her fiancé in an accident three years earlier, she announces that she will never marry but instead plans to simply enjoy her social position. When local gossip suggests that a longtime friend accidentally drowned due to her unbalanced mental state, Petra is shocked. However, her friend’s former footman tells Petra that her friend is not dead but may have been sent to a women’s asylum. Before she can get more details, the footman is murdered. Petra is determined to discover who is behind the killing and if it is linked to this asylum where men of the ton lock away their wives and daughters. While uncovering the truth, Petra must rely on her own ingenuity and cunning—and a little help from her friends—to keep her freedom and sanity.
VERDICT The fast-paced, witty plot benefits from a variety of supporting characters, including Petra’s feisty lady’s maid, a childhood friend, and a street urchin who runs errands not appropriate for a lady. A cliffhanger implies that there are more adventures to come. For fans of headstrong women sleuths and readers of Deanna Raybourn and Kerry Greenwood.
