Sancken (homiletics, United Theological Seminary;
Words That Heal) takes on the challenge of exploring how churches can deal with the societal trauma wrought by the COVID pandemic, generational racism, and shaky economic times. The author examines collective trauma and how it has manifested itself in churches and the greater society. Evident in the authenticity of her recommendations are her experiences as an ordained pastor in the Mennonite Church USA and her familiarity with how churches function. She explores how spiritual practices, such as lamenting and storytelling, can aid congregations in expressing and processing the wounds of trauma and finding the resilience to heal. The book also includes pragmatic suggestions for incorporating each practice into congregational life.
VERDICT Those who lead and support congregations would do well to consider this well-supported book. It’s filled with advice about how to adjust to a post-pandemic world.
