If readers picture crisp, modern decor when they think of alpine style, O’Shea-Evans’s (contributing editor, House Beautiful; coauthor, Lodge: An Indoorsy Tour of America’s National Parks) work will recalibrate that image. Her book, with its sumptuous photography of mountain homes and lodges from around the world, will have readers imagining dark cozy corners with piles of blankets and hot cocoa in every mug. She guides readers through various seasons to view these mountain homes in all kinds of weather. Minimal text is sprinkled in between pictures of cozy rooms and spectacular views. Tips for creating one’s own lodge are peppered throughout the book, though some readers may doubt the practicality of filling their homes with hand-carved Tyrolean chairs and dry clean–only faux fur blankets. Most of the recommendations seem aimed at readers who might be looking to turn a vacation home or investment property into a moneymaking Alpine haven, which the author herself has done.
VERDICT Libraries with extensive travel and design collections might appreciate this image-rich book, but budget-conscious readers probably won’t find many design tips they can take home with them.
