When DeAndre Booker, alderman and vice mayor for the city of Chicago, is found dead from an apparent animal attack, Det. Ethan Grainger is called in to investigate. Ethan is immediately suspicious that the Kindred, the mafia of shape-shifters descended from Nephilim, are somehow involved when a poker chip from the casino the supernatural group runs is found in the victim's pocket. For answers, Ethan calls on the one Kindred he trusts, Nuala Lazare. Of course, she is not eager to help Ethan since she blames him for the death of her former lover—Ethan's deceased partner Shade Cross. Together, they must find a way to work through their shared grief and physical attraction to get to the bottom of this deep well of corruption plaguing the city and their own lives. Given that Nuala's character is pregnant with Shade's baby during the majority of the book, the plot that focuses on her growing relationship with Ethan and their desire to unravel the criminal underbelly of Chicago reads as a supernatural mystery, with only a splash of romance.
VERDICT This second book in Rosemoor's "Kindred Souls"series (after Animal Instincts) is initially difficult to read as a stand-alone, but it does eventually begin to piece together.
