In this book, psychologist Vitelli (
What You Need To Know About Schizophrenia) employs a question-and-answer format to underscore the variety of diagnoses within autism spectrum disorder. His book addresses common myths, misconceptions, and misinformation while providing factual information applicable to real-life situations. Organized by topic, the book covers basic information, causes, features/symptoms, diagnosis, management, living with autism, and case studies. The five case studies illustrate a personalized treatment plan, an experience of a residential care facility, the effects of autism on family life, being diagnosed with autism as an adult, and life as a person with undiagnosed autism. The seven-page “Guide to Health Literacy” section presents an excellent tutorial on vetting health information for accuracy and currency. The three-page annotated bibliography includes books published from 2006 to 2015, along with a list of websites, podcasts, webinars, and organizations. While many of the podcast links are no longer active, current podcasts can be located via the main webpages or through a general search engine. There’s also a four-page glossary and a detailed index.
VERDICT Well written and useful for teens and caregivers. While there are plenty of materials on autism, few Q&A resources are as teen-oriented as this one.
