Food Network regular and popular
Baked by Dan blogger Langan brings “foolproof” recipes to home bakers in this highly approachable and tip-focused cookbook debut. Langan creates recipes that are almost sneakily skillful, with playfully titled yet familiar recipes and gorgeous, bright full-page photos. Closer inspection reveals this as a sincere and well-considered road map for beginning bakers to improve their skills, with excellently written sections on key topics, from ingredient options to “Dan on Pans” (i.e., why he uses specific ones). Similarly, each of the book’s five main sections—“The Cookie Jar,” “Bar None,” “What’s for Breakfast,” “The Upper Crust,” and “Cake It Easy”—are rich with pro-level tidbits made eminently comprehensible via insightful intros and regular “Baker’s Notes.” The effect is an inclusive baker’s education, shaped by Langan’s experiences and tastes, with enough sprinkles and color along the way for everyone to enjoy. Langan’s model recipes include toasted-coconut lime bars, mochaccino muffins, blueberry lattice pie, and chocolate-orange cake with ganache and berries.
VERDICT A delightful cookbook that fulfills its promise of helping bakers of various levels advance their skills, without skimping on the fun.
