Millar (
The Chosen One) crafts a crossover epic, drawing on characters from 20 different titles he’s created over the past two decades. In 1986, a coalition of supervillains calling themselves the Fraternity massacred Earth’s superheroes and brainwashed the public into forgetting they ever existed, before assuming control over the planet. Today, after becoming aware of the emergence of a new generation of heroes, the Fraternity launches a global terror campaign in order to preserve their power. Thankfully, the world’s heroes are spurred to action. A suave British superspy recruits the vigilante Hit-Girl for a guns-blazing counteroffensive, and her former sidekick comes out of retirement to battle evil as Kick-Ass. A brilliant billionaire/daredevil/occultist travels back in time in search of the key to victory, while teenage vampires muster the courage to stand up against evil. A family of powerful magicians also ponders how to help without disrupting the fabric of reality—or if they should simply bring this reality to an end.
VERDICT Millar’s skill for conveying characterization and exposition through action and Larraz’s (X-Men: Hellfire Gala 2023) fluidly dynamic illustration make this an action-packed, breathtakingly paced, and surprisingly accessible superhero epic.
