Lives are set to change forever in this second book of the “Winter Sea Trilogy,” after
Dark Water Daughter. The novel follows Samuel Rosser (a captain and Sooth) and Mary Firth (a Stormsinger), as they now sail under a different kingdom’s colors. When they learn that Sam’s twin brother, Benedict, has been taken prisoner by the kingdom of Mere, they hatch a plan to save him. Mere may also be able to cure the twins of their magical corruption, making this decision easier. However, there are secrets awaiting them in Mere—secrets that will change the very nature of magic and create a violent imbalance and possible war between the competing sea powers. This title is a solid middle entry in a trilogy, wrapping up threads, advancing the plot, and following beloved characters, all while leaving enough open for the last book. Long’s skill at worldbuilding and character creation is exceptional.
VERDICT An impressive, swashbuckling high-seas adventure that is just as fantastic a read as the first novel. Fantasy lovers will delight at a series that adds something different to the genre and continuously exceeds expectations.
