In her new stand-alone thriller, Davidson (Evil in All Its Disguises) introduces the reader to a cast of troubled, double-crossing characters who end up entangled in a dangerous game. Dominique Monaghan is a former model who wants to get revenge on her married ex-boyfriend, Gary Cowan. In addition to cheating on his wealthy wife, Gary is a retired boxer who has schemes and desires of his own. And after Dominique and Gary get caught up in a kidnapping gone wrong, Desmond Edgars, Dominique's brother, is tasked with unraveling the mystery and avenging his sister. Davidson keeps the story moving along at a fast clip, and although her characters are often thinly drawn and largely unlikable, you can't help turning the pages in anticipation of yet another twist or turn.
VERDICT Recommended for mystery fans who appreciate quirky tales of revenge and family drama. [See also Davidson's Mystery BackTalk essay "A Genre's Woman Problem," LJ 12/13, p. 72.—Ed.]
