In the second “Hawaii CI” title (after The Big Island Killer), Dex Adair and his narcotics-detecting golden retriever, Barnabas, are sent undercover to the Maoli Lodge on Kauai. They are tasked with investigating the death of a fellow DEA agent and a potential drug smuggling operation. Katrina Sizemore, recently widowed, owns and runs the lodge. When Katrina receives threatening letters, Dex wonders if her husband’s recent death could be connected. Dex and Katrina will have to learn to trust each other in order to uncover a conspiracy.
VERDICT While the writing is occasionally stilted, Flowers’s love of Hawai‘i and background as a criminologist make an impact. .
