Is she a teacher? A detective? A disappointment? Too old to be living at home and doing nothing, this is what Charlotte is trying to figure out with the help of her friends Lucy and Gabe as she starts a substitute teaching position at her old middle school after the end of her last (and she means last!) case. But the world (well, her friends and family) has a very different idea for this former child detective. Charlotte ends up right back in the realm of mysteries, lies, politics, and scandal while trying to handle middle-schoolers and her crush. Siegel naturally narrates her own novel, as it is derived from a web series she created and starred in. Her feel for the characters shines through her voice acting, especially in representing Charlotte’s attitude.
VERDICT In this new era of cozy mysteries, this is a good example of how to create and narrate such a novel. Fans of Charlotte Illes Is Not a Detective will enjoy its sequel, which can also be appreciated on its own.
