Reid’s follow-up to
Such a Fun Age follows 24-year-old Millie Cousins, a senior resident assistant at the University of Arkansas. Millie dreams of finally graduating, getting a job, and buying a house. Then she meets visiting professor Agatha Paul, and her world is upended. Agatha enlists Millie’s support in her morally questionable research project, paying her to let her eavesdrop on other students’ conversations in her dorm; Agatha then publishes these somewhat altered accounts in
Teen Vogue. Millie agrees without much thought, only for this project to jeopardize everything she has worked so hard for. Nicole Lewis deftly voices Millie, Agatha, and the other students at the dorm, supplying a range of voices and accents to capture their personalities and social standing. Lewis excels in communicating Agatha and Millie’s personalities—strong-willed, determined women who are weighed down by the challenges of their day-to-day lives. Some listeners may get bogged down in this slow-moving story that seems to circle in on itself, but those seeking intricate character studies will be intrigued.
VERDICT Reid’s many fans will be eager for this one. Share with listeners more interested in messy, flawed characters than discernible plots.
