Aimed at beginner amigurumi makers, this book contains more than 30 patterns from 10 different amigurumi designers. The projects range from a trio of dinosaurs and a Flemish giant rabbit to a tiny princess and a chubby Santa and his elf. Star ratings indicate the difficulty of the patterns, and each one begins with an introduction to the designer. A “Getting Started” section gives readers new to crochet the instructions for basic stitches and techniques. Amigurumi techniques such as the magic ring, working in the round, and joining pieces are explained in great detail. The “Crochet Glossary” at the end bookends the “Getting Started” section. Originally published in the UK, most of the book’s patterns have been updated to use U.S. crochet terminology. Overall, the patterns are easy to follow and laid out well. Several of the patterns, however, lack the sophistication and depth that crocheters have come to expect from amigurumi patterns.
VERDICT This simple and practical book is best suited for collections lacking in beginning instructional craft books.
