In this melancholy tale of a man searching for a purpose in a confusing world, Haris Abadi travels from Detroit to Turkey with the plan of slipping into Syria and joining the fight against Bashar al-Assad's regime. These plans go awry when he is turned away at the border and robbed, but he then meets up with a Syrian man and his wife. The thoughts of the refugees and the consequences of their decisions are probed in a unique and thoughtful manner that poses monumental questions that are seldom put into words. What does loss make us do? What does survival cost? What does hope really keep alive? The narration of Vikas Adam transforms, through his adapt accents and considerate inflections, what could have been a depressing story into one of genuine meaning.
VERDICT Recommended, especially in light of current events. ["Here is a thriller, psychological fiction, political intrigue, and even a love story all wrapped into a stunningly realistic and sometimes horrifying package": LJ 9/15/16 starred review of the Knopf hc.]
