Although Lee Barrett Mondello is still the program director and sometimes a field reporter for WICH-TV in Salem, MA, she’s also a newlywed, trying to juggle her work responsibilities with her new life with Detective Sergeant Pete Mondello. This time, her stories coincide with his latest case. The town is abuzz with stories of Paragon Productions’ movie
Night Magic, filming in Salem since it involves witches. Rumor has it the two stars, Darla Diamond and Lamont Faraday, hate each other. When Darla is found murdered, poisoned by chocolates, Lamont is asleep in her trailer. While Pete focuses on the murder, Lee’s proposed documentary suggests there were problems at Paragon. The film is over budget, there have been accidents in California, and now on the Salem set. Lee’s news stories take her from a costume warehouse to a refuge for TV animals. She’s trying to use her childhood TV idol as a source, but a tarot card reader warns her to be more objective in her decisions, or they will lead her into danger.
VERDICT The killer will be obvious to cozy readers, but fans of the series will once again enjoy the characters and Salem setting in the sequel to Now You See It.
