In Rushdan’s third novel “Fugitive Heroes: Topaz Unit” novel (following Alaskan Christmas Escape) veterinarian Kate Sawyer discovers that the man she thought was an elderly bartender is in fact her estranged high school sweetheart, Dean Delgado, a disavowed CIA agent who came home to hide. Kate gets swept up in a plot involving drugs, crooked police, and a prostitution ring, and Dean accidentally reveals himself when coming to her rescue.
VERDICT Some of Rushdan’s plot depends on her characters failing to fully think through their actions through all the way, but readers who are already invested in the series will enjoy finding out more about why this team was disavowed.
