In 1863, 17-year-old Charlie Cox reflects on life in his Indiana Quaker community: “There is nothing to do here, and we do nothing. Nothing to assist our country, and nothing to satisfy the frustrated, patriotic spirits within ourselves.” Soon after, he runs away to enlist in the Union army and join the fight against the secessionist states. Marching south under the command of Major General William Tecumseh Sherman, he’s shaken by the barbarism of war. Meanwhile, the family Charlie left behind faces challenges of their own.
VERDICT Shaw (Clue: Candlestick) eschews panel-to-panel storytelling in favor of overlapping images that flow across pages redolent of an artist’s sketchbook, overlaid with text and narration quoted from letters between Charlie and his sister.
