Chadwick (Ctr. for Professional Ethics, Univ. of Central Lancashire; Ethics, Reproduction, and Genetic Control) has gathered a global array of practitioners, philosophers, and other academics in this expanded update of the 1997 first edition. Each volume includes a reader's guide, a full subject classification, and a table of contents for the set. The subject classification—which arranges articles alphabetically under broad topics such as "Bioethics," "Ethics in Education," "Philosophy/Theories," and "Ethics in Politics"—illustrates the work's broad scope. Some content, viewed by the editor as "classic" from the first edition, is reprinted in the second, but readers will also find topical expansion of issues that were just emerging in 1997. These include responses to terrorism as well as technological advances affecting medicine and information sharing. The entries, which also examine applied ethics itself and challenges to it, are mostly three or four pages in length but can run up to 20 pages. Each opens with a glossary of terms, offers cross-references and suggestions for further reading (which often include relevant websites), and closes with biographical sketches of the authors.
VERDICT As a starting point for research on a wide variety of applied-ethics related topics, this set will appeal to students in higher education (both undergraduate and graduate) and academics.
