Comprised of more than 180 profiles, this volume considers successful entrepreneurs from many countries and industries mostly from the 19th to the 21st centuries, though some go back to the 14th century. Many of the individuals featured focus on one product or industry, while others had a wide range of interests. Given their relative brevity, the entries deal almost exclusively with the inventions and services of the entrepreneurs rather than with their psychology. The book is divided into seven chapters, each encompassing a theme and a time period (e.g., “Manufacturing and Mass-Production 1914–1960”). More useful is the index, which allows searching by product, service, industry, person, and company but not by country. Unfortunately, there are no suggestions for further reading.
VERDICT This is essentially a reference book that provides brief, basic information on the accomplishments of select entrepreneurs. It will likely be a resource for people interested in business history rather than being read from cover to cover.
