When Matt Pine’s parents and two younger siblings are found dead at their vacation rental in Mexico, apparently killed by a gas leak, it doesn’t take long for Matt to figure out that something isn’t adding up. The police are cagey about releasing the bodies to Matt, and someone tries to push him into traffic. It’s not the first time Matt’s family has been in the news; his older brother Danny is in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, Charlotte, when they were in high school; a recent documentary argued that Danny had been wrongfully convicted. Matt finds out that his father and sister had been chasing a new lead in Charlotte’s case when they were killed, so he picks up where they left off, even though he has reason to believe Danny is guilty. Written from multiple perspectives and jumping in time between the present, the night of Charlotte’s murder, and the days leading up to the Pine family’s deaths, Finlay’s debut is a twisty puzzle that will please fans of thrillers, suspense, and true crime. Cady McClain and Jon Lindstrom capably voice a large cast of characters and keep ratcheting up the tension.
VERDICT Recommended for public library collections.
