Becca Harper left small-town Arizona to pursue her dreams of fame in Hollywood. However, after several years and multiple auditions, she’s still working minimum-wage service jobs that she hates. Until one day she snarkily answers a cryptic Craigslist ad and books her first gig, bringing her into the world of self-proclaimed visionary Paradox and struggling single mother and costume designer Chloe. The video is simple: repeat the line “Everyone is Tulip” while wearing a number of eclectic outfits. This performance art, no doubt a reference to the viral 2015 YouTube video “I’m Poppy,” launches Becca into the realm of stardom as she becomes an internet sensation. Things get complicated when she becomes romantically entangled with Paradox, her roommate Eve tries to steal the limelight from her, and she realizes the bit that made her famous was stolen from a Japanese creator. As the situations intensify, Becca must come to grips with the two-faced nature of show business while discovering who she is and who she is becoming. Becca and Paradox are white, Eve is Latina, and Chloe is Black.
VERDICT Baker (Night Hunter) creates a dramatic and engrossing tale of betrayal, self-absorption, and the tenuous nature of fame.
