Evolution and Belief

Asher (zoology, Cambridge Univ.) makes a thorough case supporting modern Darwinian evolutionary theory against attacks from religious creationists and proponents of intelligent design (ID). However, he does not, as the subtitle implies, make any case for religiosity, either in himself or in others. He simply states repeatedly that science can neither prove nor disprove the existence of God or the origins of the universe. Therefore, evolution has nothing to do with religion, and thus neither atheism nor religion can be addressed by scientists. Aside from critiquing the militant atheism of Richard Dawkins, Asher presents nothing to confront "the perceived conflict between his occupation and his faith," as the dust jacket claims. He spends most of the book defending evolution against creationist and ID-friendly theories, which he firmly believes should not be taught in classrooms.
