Los Angeles's ocean-facing cliffs have drawn suicide jumpers over the years, but the agony of knowing that the latest victim, Abigail, was the niece of a woman who died in the same manner a couple of decades earlier is just too much for ecopsychologist Dr. Esmeralda Green, who has connections to both women. The difference: Abigail's death was murder. Esmeralda is inundated by internal pressure to solve the case, to comfort Abigail's family, and to work with the media and the police. Trusting no one, she struggles with her romantic entanglement with a local newscaster and fights the female lead detective on the case. Esmeralda is at her best when working with a young client who is blossoming with horse therapy. But danger shows up everywhere, and the eroding cliffs may be where Esmeralda herself is headed if she doesn't watch her step.
VERDICT Fischer's debut mystery introduces a fascinating topic—ecopsychology
