Kevin Costner narrates this documentary about the most fascinating pitch in baseball. There are interviews with former fire-throwing legends Goose Gossage, Bob Gibson, and Nolan Ryan and some contemporary hurlers such as David Price. The masterful hitters who faced them, like Hank Aaron, Mike Schmidt, and Wade Boggs, provide context and assessment. Pitchers talk about how they used intimidation and fear to keep batters off balance. Baseball naturally lends itself to storytelling, and some rich and often humorous tales are related here. Still, it is the scholars of baseball who take some of the subjectivity out of the film and demonstrate how dominant those pitchers were, explaining how a 100 mph pitch plays games with the eye and the mind.
VERDICT A slick production presented in a measured and well-illustrated manner; should appeal to more in-depth fans of the game.
