This graphic guide, from Jenainati (Head of the School of Cross-Faculty studies, Univ. of Warwick) and artists Groves and Milton, to the past, present, and possible future of feminism explores the numerous varieties of feminist thought and action dating before and after the watershed activism of the 1960s. Similar to its companion volumes Queer and Gender, this latest work distills tricky academic theories into accessible text, combined with quotes from pertinent luminaries and black-and-white illustrations that provide faces to those names as well as context. Reader less familiar with the topic of feminism and those who struggle with the concept as presented in classrooms will appreciate the assist; more knowledgable audiences will be surprised by how much ground the book covers, even if they have issues with the content, which is oft-provocative but suitable for most.
VERDICT No single volume could encapsulate such a complex subject--thankfully there are primers such as this to give readers the essential basics, plus suggestions as to how they might continue their learning. Recommended for all nonfiction collections with an area for feminism.
