In this photo essay, commercial photographer Scott (
Finding Home: Shelter Dogs and Their Stories) assaults readers’ emotions with heartbreak, second chances, and her outstandingly gorgeous portraits (accompanied with narratives) of 27 dogs with rough pasts who have finally found their forever homes—among them are the three-legged puppy Carl and the pit bull Frogger. Some of Scott’s subjects were puppy mill rejects, others were surrendered by their owners for anxiety and behavioral problems, but all of them will inspire readers with their rocky, emotional, ultimately joyful transitions to new families and homes. Scott emphasizes these dogs’ adaptability, which carried them through abandonment, abuse, greed, neglect, or other unfortunate circumstances, and her portraits give them dignity.
VERDICT There exist many similar books about rescue dogs, but Scott’s stands out for its emphasis on the characters of both the dogs and the human volunteers who work tirelessly to find them homes.
