Ghost Island

In his fourth novel featuring hardened Helsinki police detective Jessica Niemi (after The Last Grudge), Seeck follows Jessica to a secluded island for a needed retreat. Although hoping to keep to herself, she becomes wrapped up in the lives of visitors called “the Birds of Spring,” a group of refugees brought to the island during World War II to live in the orphanage. When one of the group is found dead, Jessica is thrust into another thrilling mystery that mirrors four previous deaths spanning decades. Local legend says the person responsible is the ghost of a young orphan in a blue raincoat who used to wait at the end of the pier for her father before disappearing. Narrator Abby Craden pulls listeners into an emotional mystery that explores Jessica’s demons and those of a small island community that hosted traumatized and grief-stricken children.
