Blakely Bennett and Emmett Maxwell had a marriage of convenience when they were in the Army. They were best friends, and it seemed like a good idea at the time. But after a night where their friendship turned into something more, Blakely snuck out on her husband and left him high and dry. Feeling abandoned, he filed for divorce, sent her the papers, and never heard from her again. Until, two and a half years later, she shows up out of the blue in his small town looking to solve a mystery. All Emmett wants from her is to sign the divorce papers so they can get on with their lives. Instead, as the sheriff of this county, he’s thrown into her mystery and tries not to get caught up in the past. Blakely, for her part, is looking for ways to make amends and salvage the relationship she acknowledges she broke years ago.
VERDICT This romantic suspense novel from Michaels (Help Me Remember) has all the action and violence expected, as well as a heroine who can be extremely unlikable but will grow on readers.
