The GRE is among the evaluations used to gain entrance to graduate school. It includes two timed analytical writing measures, composed of issue and argument analysis. This guide outlines what a test-taker must do to score high on the writing section, including the rubric for scoring the essays. It also has more general guidance for the entire GRE exam. After a lengthy overview, the main body of the book is arranged into “issue”- and “argument”-focused task sections. Each section is then subdivided into the topics that might be addressed in the GRE’s writing prompts, such as arts, education, politics, and philosophy. There are sample essay prompts, along with example essays to evaluate and strategies to plan a high-scoring answer.
VERDICT Created by a corporate author rather than a writing professor, the work lacks a voice and is tonally straightforward, but the guidance (plus the 72 essay prompts and sample essays) offers grad-school hopefuls more than enough information and support to feel confident facing the GRE’s writing section. Add this to collections that already have general GRE test-prep titles.
