After covering vegan comfort foods, quick dishes, foreign cuisine, and low-calorie living, Nixon (
Happy Herbivore Abroad) applies her same no-fuss approach to special-occasion meals: holiday feasts, romantic dinners, breakfast in bed, brunch, BBQs, and kid-friendly gatherings. This fifth book in the "Happy Herbivore" series tackles one occasion per chapter, starting with a suggested menu list before segueing into the recipes and abundant photos. As always, Nixon's recipes are straightforward, simple, and made without added oils or fats. Extras include party planning tips, basic nutritional information, glossaries, additional recipe suggestions from her other books, advice on navigating events as a vegan, and helpful indexes.
VERDICT Nixon promises no-nonsense, no-weird-ingredient cooking, and she delivers. Although fans may recognize some repeat recipes from the author's previous works, this is still well worth checking out for her spin on celebratory meals. Vegan foodies may find the simple approach uninspiring but have several other excellent titles to turn to, such as Joy Pierson et al's Vegan Holiday Cooking from Candle Café, Nava Atlas's Vegan Holiday Kitchen, and Jennifer Katzinger's Gluten-Free and Vegan Holidays.
