Police officer Eva “Lightning Dance” Duran, a member of the Taos Pueblo tribal police department, is frustrated with her role following a bank robbery in Taos. She’s relegated to watching traffic on the Taos Pueblo reservation while the city police and feds investigate the robbery. The Pueblo people soon have a bigger tragedy on their hands. One of their children is shot dead on a school field trip when he brandishes a gun. While the tribe prepares for the funeral rituals, Eva asks questions and learns the child had one of the 3D guns that recently appeared at crime scenes. Multiple characters relate their roles in the manufacture and distribution of the guns, but a body on the reservation leads to a violent confrontation between the police and some desperate criminals. Eva is in the midst of the violence, as well as the beautiful, nearly mystical rituals on the reservation. While it’s difficult to keep all the characters straight due to multiple points of view, Ledford’s sequel to Redemption excels at the descriptions of the Taos Pueblo, the characters, and the rituals.
VERDICT For fans of books by both Tony and Anne Hillerman, along with others that embody the spirit and landscape of the Southwest.
