When Sadie, a young Amish woman, becomes pregnant out of wedlock, her parents send her to live with relatives in Kentucky. As she gains independence, she also begins to view her parents' controlling actions as unfair and even brutal. Complicating the situation, her Kentucky family is involved in moonshining, and several people, including Sadie's aunt, have recently died from tainted alcohol. An Amish EMT has also taken a liking to Sadie, but she's afraid that he will abandon her like the baby's father did if he learns about her pregnancy. The family's secrets not only threaten that relationship but may also tear the entire clan apart. Following
His Guilt, this fourth book in Gray's Kentucky-based series is a sure bet for Amish fiction fans, but the novel is somewhat predicable, wraps up too neatly, and contains inconsistencies in its characterizations. Both the setting and some of the characters could have been more developed. However, the inclusion of an Amish EMT does offer an interesting take on alternative occupations to farming and carpentry.
VERDICT Purchase only where there is demand. [See Prepub Alert, 1/22/18.]
