Emily Porter has recently returned to Chicago to start over after a messy divorce from her cheating husband. The move comes with a new, temporary museum job that involves restoring a medieval statue of a knight, with the potential for a permanent position if Emily does well. Emily finds herself drawn to the statue from the beginning, even imagining that the knight can speak to her. After a vivid dream starring the knight, who calls himself Griffin de Beauford, Emily becomes convinced that the statue does contain an actual ensorcelled knight. She brings him back to life with a kiss, releasing a man out of his stone prison into a confusing modern world and unthinkingly causing a crisis at her job when the “statue” goes missing. Emily and Griffin grow closer together even as the challenges facing them, from getting Griffin modern vaccines and a paying job to clearing Emily of art theft suspicion, grow more pressing.
VERDICT If readers appreciate a slight fantasy twist, they’ll be rewarded with a frothy contemporary romance from Donovan (The Equinox Stone). It will especially appeal to readers who enjoy a touch of Marvel’s Thor in their romantic heroes.
