Rose Pang is tired of sitting at home alone as all of her friends are paired up, so she decides to hit a bar on her own. She meets Cal Dempsey, and they share a delightful evening together. He swears to call her that weekend, but when his phone is destroyed along with her number, he fears he’s never going to see her again. Rose is crushed when he doesn’t call and is surprised when he turns up months later—as her new roommate. While Cal is delighted to reconnect with Rose, she isn’t quite as forgiving. They decide to go forward as roommates, which slowly turns into a friendship. Each learns about their new roommate’s particular quirks. But can Rose trust Cal after such a disappointing start?
VERDICT This is a delightful story that is also wonderfully Canadian. Rose has a history of depression and anxiety, and there is mention of a character’s death by suicide that happened in the past, which impacts the current story. Lau (Her Favorite Rebound) handles these issues in a way that is sensitive and authentic.
