Here Carroll (Grace Under Fire) chronicles the author's cross-county trip in search of forgotten history and discusses the historical events that took place at unmarked sites in the United States. His work on this book also led to his campaign of the same name to find and preserve these sites. The subjects cover everyone from vaccine makers to female pioneer mountain climbers. The travelog includes encounters with amateur and professional historians, as well as an exciting brush with the FBI. Though these accounts are individually engaging, the structure of the book is loose and can make it difficult at times to derive the greater historical context of the stories. Popular history readers will have run into some of these "forgotten" pieces of history in works by authors like Sarah Vowell and Ron Chernow. Carroll's own narration is good, but some of the audio editing is rough.
VERDICT Fun but nonessential. Recommended only for large libraries with high interest in popular history.
