A disease that turns its victims into cannibals, or "Beaters," has ravaged civilization, leaving only a few pockets of survivors. Cass Dollar, one of the few who have succumbed to the disease and recovered, hides her past from her current traveling companions and devotes herself to her daughter; her lover, who languishes in a coma; and a newcomer named Dor, for whom she feels an inescapable attraction. The third installment of Littlefield's series (Aftertime; Rebirth) aptly describes a world shaken to the core by cataclysmic events that have destroyed the basic loyalties and trust binding human society.
VERDICT Fans of postapocalyptic fiction, including Stephen King's classic The Stand, should enjoy this title. Littlefield also writes acclaimed crime fiction (A Bad Day for Sorry), so this might tempt readers of those books who might not otherwise try sf.
