In her memoir, Fox News meteorologist Dean reports in heartbreaking detail how she lost her parents-in-law to COVID during the early days of the pandemic. Her storytelling evokes the confusion and chaos that was happening inside nursing homes as COVID quickly spread, sending her world into a tailspin. This book isn’t all about the pandemic, however. It draws heavily on the biblical tale of David and Goliath, as each chapter tells the story of an underdog fighting against a mammoth system in the effort to right a wrong. From a gymnast standing up to the behemoth USA Gymnastics and its abuse, to terminally ill 9/11 firefighters demanding healthcare from their government, and to the author herself questioning the leadership of disgraced New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, the book repeatedly establishes that one person really can improve their situation. While the political messaging of the book is heavy-handed at times, the author’s desire for transparency and accountability in hospital settings and eldercare is commendable. With faith ever-present, Dean ultimately finds solace in sharing these difficult stories and feels uplifted by the bravery of those around her.
VERDICT An inspirational book that is sure to be a hit with many library patrons.
