Alex Marks moved to Manhattan to escape her past. After seven years there, she has two acquaintances at the Bluebird Diner, and a job writing copy for a pharmaceutical company. But the murder of Francis Keen, who writes the column “Dear Constance,” turns her world upside down. She depended on the empathetic columnist for advice. When the newspaper advertises for a replacement, Alex is angry. Who can replace Francis? After too much wine, she applies for the job. It’s only after she accepts the position that she realizes she’s exposed herself to the world. She receives threatening letters, learns secrets about her boss, and hears noises when she’s alone in the old newspaper building. She fears everyone, including her assistant and a new man in her life. She only reveals her fears to her friends at the Bluebird Diner, a waitress and an ex-cop, but they’re willing to help her. There’s either a killer in the building, or someone is gaslighting Alex.
