Matheson (medieval studies, Michigan State Univ.) covers the lives of 21 key figures from the Middle Ages. He presents in great detail a variety of subjects, from mythic King Arthur to author Geoffrey Chaucer and from Saint Francis to the fearsome Vlad Dracul. Entries are supplemented by color period reproductions. The second volume also includes essays on the role of the castle in medieval society and on the methods of siege warfare. The material here is more in-depth than typical books on this subject also accessible to young adults, and it is presented clearly, though usually in a scholarly manner. Each entry is divided into relevant subtopics and is followed by plentiful further-reading suggestions that will help those doing more detailed study.
VERDICT This work will be useful to beginning medieval scholars as it is a good place for initial research on prominent figures of the period. A welcome addition to secondary libraries needing to update their history sections or medieval studies collections.
